Summary: Sellers may promote their WPBay products and services through WPBay, their own websites, advertising, affiliates, newsletters, social media and other lawful channels. Promotions must be accurate, transparent and respectful of customer choice. Sellers must not use promotions to mislead customers, create fake urgency, manipulate reviews or rankings, send spam, misuse trademarks or move WPBay customers to an external checkout or payment process.
These guidelines form part of the WPBay Seller Agreement and apply alongside the WPBay Terms and Conditions and Acceptable Use Policy.
Who and what these guidelines cover
These guidelines apply to:
- product and service listings;
- seller profiles and storefronts;
- listing titles, descriptions, tags, screenshots, videos and live demos;
- discounts, free trials, bundles and promotional pricing;
- WPBay messages, support conversations and seller email campaigns;
- social media, advertising and content marketing;
- affiliate and influencer promotions;
- competitions, giveaways and bonus offers; and
- promotional notices included within plugins, themes, scripts or other products.
If you appoint an affiliate, agency, influencer or another person to promote your listing, you are responsible for promotional materials and claims you provide, authorize or control.
In these guidelines, a “listing” includes any product or service offered through WPBay.
The basic rule
You may promote your work, but your marketing must give customers an honest understanding of:
- what they will receive;
- what the product or service can do;
- what it costs;
- whether the payment is one-time or recurring;
- what support, updates and licence rights are included;
- whether any external service, account or paid dependency is required; and
- any important limitations or conditions.
Do not hide information that a reasonable customer would need before deciding whether to purchase.
What you may do
You may:
- describe and demonstrate your listing’s genuine features, functionality and benefits;
- use accurate screenshots, videos, documentation and live demos;
- promote your WPBay listing through your website, blog, newsletter, social media, advertising or other external channels;
- use supported WPBay discounts, trials, subscriptions and plan-based pricing;
- purchase or participate in WPBay promotional and featured-placement opportunities;
- link to your other relevant WPBay products or service listings;
- offer installation, customization, consulting or premium support as a separate WPBay service listing;
- link to relevant documentation, support portals, changelogs, status pages and live demos;
- include genuine bonus content or bundled components when they are clearly described and properly licensed;
- ask customers to leave an honest rating or review without offering an incentive;
- use the WPBay Affiliate Program in accordance with its current rules; and
- sell the same product through your own website or another marketplace, because WPBay is non-exclusive unless otherwise agreed in writing.
WPBay does not endorse or assume responsibility for independent promotional activities conducted outside the marketplace.
External sales and WPBay customers
You may independently sell your products elsewhere. However, you must not use WPBay to divert a WPBay customer around WPBay’s checkout, licensing, payment or commission systems.
For example, you must not:
- ask a customer who found or purchased a product through WPBay to pay you directly by bank transfer, PayPal, cryptocurrency, invoice or another external method;
- direct a WPBay customer to purchase an upgrade, renewal or replacement licence through an external checkout to avoid WPBay fees;
- withhold product files, activation, updates or access until the customer makes an additional external payment;
- replace a WPBay purchase with an off-platform transaction;
- place external checkout instructions in a WPBay listing, support reply, order message or customer email; or
- use external activation or account registration as a disguised second payment step.
Relevant links to documentation, live demos, support systems or genuinely separate third-party services are allowed. If your product requires a paid external API, hosting service, SaaS account or other dependency, that requirement and its likely cost must be clearly disclosed before purchase.
WPBay remains the Merchant of Record for WPBay transactions. Customer payments, refunds and subscription billing must follow WPBay’s approved systems and policies.
Discounts and promotional pricing
You may run discounts and promotions using the tools supported by WPBay.
All pricing claims must be genuine, accurate and capable of being verified. In particular:
- A crossed-out, previous or “regular” price must be a genuine reference price.
- A discount must represent a real reduction and not a permanently inflated comparison price.
- The promotion’s start date, end date and eligibility conditions must be clear where relevant.
- You must not continually restart an expired countdown or describe an ongoing offer as ending soon.
- You must not claim that only a limited number of digital licences remain unless that limitation is genuine and approved by WPBay.
- Savings comparisons must compare equivalent licence tiers, billing periods and included features.
- If a price is described as “starting at” a particular amount, customers must be able to purchase a genuine available plan at that price.
- Claims about taxes, VAT or the final checkout total must be accurate. The amount shown through WPBay’s checkout is authoritative.
- Any legally required reference-price or prior-price rules must be followed.
Trials and introductory prices must clearly explain:
- how long the trial or introductory period lasts;
- whether payment details are required;
- whether the subscription renews automatically;
- the price charged after the promotional period; and
- how the customer can cancel.
Do not describe an offer as “free” if the customer must make an unavoidable payment to use the advertised feature. Any required paid dependency must be disclosed prominently.
Refund and money-back claims
You may accurately refer customers to the WPBay Refund Policy.
Because WPBay processes customer transactions and has final authority over refund administration, you must not advertise a separate money-back guarantee, rebate, cashback arrangement or refund policy for a WPBay purchase unless WPBay has approved it in writing.
You must not promise that you personally can issue a refund outside the WPBay refund process.
Bonuses, bundles, giveaways and competitions
Unlike hidden purchase incentives, clearly described bonuses and bundles may be offered when:
- the customer can see what is included before purchasing;
- you own or have the necessary rights to distribute every component;
- all applicable licence conditions are explained;
- the bonus is delivered through an approved method;
- the offer does not require an additional undisclosed payment; and
- it does not conflict with another WPBay policy.
Giveaways and competitions must have clear terms, eligibility rules, deadlines and prize information. You are responsible for ensuring that they comply with applicable laws.
You must not:
- require a five-star or positive review as a condition of entry;
- reward customers for removing or changing a negative review;
- distribute shared purchase codes, accounts or licence keys;
- give away product files in a way that exceeds their licence;
- imply that WPBay sponsors or administers the promotion unless WPBay has agreed to do so; or
- use a competition to collect personal data without an appropriate legal basis and privacy information.
Affiliate and influencer promotion
Affiliate links, sponsored posts, paid endorsements and promotions involving a free licence or another benefit must clearly disclose the relationship.
The disclosure must be easy to notice and understand. It should appear close to the recommendation or promotional claim and must not be hidden only in a profile, footer, terms page or unclear hashtag.
Affiliates and sellers must not use:
- self-referrals;
- cookie stuffing or hidden tracking;
- forced clicks or redirects;
- adware or browser manipulation;
- false coupon or discount pages;
- fake testimonials or fabricated product experiences;
- spam;
- domains, advertisements or accounts that impersonate WPBay or another business; or
- another person’s trademark in a way that creates confusion about the source or endorsement of an offer.
WPBay’s affiliate program is intended for genuine referrals. Review Can I Refer Myself or Use My Own Link? before using affiliate links for purchases involving you, your business, your clients or accounts you control.
Ratings and reviews
You may invite customers to leave an honest review. The request must be neutral and must not pressure the customer to provide a particular rating.
You must not:
- create or purchase fake reviews;
- review your own listing through another account;
- arrange review exchanges with another seller;
- provide a refund, discount, bonus, licence extension or other benefit in exchange for a review;
- make support conditional on leaving or changing a review;
- ask only customers known to be satisfied to leave public reviews while directing other customers elsewhere;
- pressure a customer to remove a critical review; or
- use promotion to manipulate ratings, sales statistics, downloads or marketplace rankings.
See the Rating or Review Removal Policy for information about reviews that may be reported to WPBay.
Email, messages and customer information
Promotional communications must comply with applicable privacy and electronic-marketing laws.
You must not:
- scrape WPBay account or customer information;
- send unsolicited advertising through WPBay;
- repeatedly message users who have not requested information;
- use order, licence or support information for unrelated marketing without an appropriate legal basis;
- add customers to external mailing lists without valid permission;
- hide the sender’s identity; or
- make it unnecessarily difficult for recipients to unsubscribe.
WPBay seller campaigns and email tools may only be used for relevant communications to eligible recipients. Marketing messages must include any legally required identification and opt-out information.
Security notices, essential update information and support replies must not be disguised advertisements.
Claims about your product or service
Promotional claims must be truthful and supported by appropriate evidence.
Do not make misleading claims about:
- WordPress, PHP, browser, plugin or theme compatibility;
- performance improvements or benchmark results;
- security, privacy, accessibility or legal compliance;
- customer numbers, sales, downloads or market position;
- awards, rankings or endorsements;
- support response times;
- future functionality;
- included licences, updates or renewal rights; or
- comparisons with competing products.
Planned features may be discussed, but they must be identified as planned rather than currently included or guaranteed.
Comparisons with another product must be current, fair and based on equivalent versions, plans and testing conditions.
Trademarks and WPBay branding
You may truthfully state that your product or service is available on WPBay and use promotional assets expressly provided or approved by WPBay.
You must not:
- alter or misuse the WPBay logo;
- suggest that WPBay created, certified, endorsed or officially partnered with your product unless that is true;
- create a website, social account or advertisement that could be mistaken for an official WPBay channel;
- use another business’s name or logo merely to attract search traffic; or
- imply sponsorship, authorization or compatibility that does not exist.
See the Trademark and Real-world Product Rules for further guidance.
Promotions inside plugins, themes and other products
Promotional notices within a product must be relevant, proportionate and respectful of the customer.
Administrative upsells should normally:
- relate directly to the product or its available extensions;
- appear within the product’s own settings or administration area;
- accurately explain what is free and what requires payment; and
- be dismissible where they are not essential.
Products must not:
- inject unrelated advertisements into a customer’s public website;
- display deceptive system or security warnings;
- repeatedly restore a dismissed promotional notice;
- disable an advertised feature solely to force an unexpected upgrade;
- insert undisclosed affiliate links;
- send promotional data to an external service without proper disclosure and legal basis; or
- direct WPBay customers to an external checkout in order to avoid WPBay systems.
WPBay promotional services and featured placement
WPBay may offer featured placement, advertising campaigns, newsletters or other promotional opportunities.
Participation does not guarantee:
- a particular number of impressions, clicks or sales;
- permanent featured placement;
- a specific marketplace ranking;
- continued eligibility for promotion; or
- acceptance of every submitted advertisement or creative.
WPBay may reject, edit, pause or remove promotional material that is inaccurate, unsuitable, technically defective or inconsistent with these guidelines.
Paid promotion does not permit artificial clicks, fake traffic, automated interactions or any attempt to manipulate marketplace statistics.
